Calicut or Kozhikode, as it is known in the local language, is a city in the north of Kerala. It was also known as the “Spice Capital”, for it was a major trading point for eastern spices. The place has historically been ruled by the Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and finally the British. Hence there are many influences of the past rulers. However, the most significant influence has been left by the Arabs, as many locals were converted into Muslims and this can be felt by the number of mosques dotting the city.

The must see places in the city are the beaches. The most prominent amongst which is the Kozhikode Beach. It is located near the town itself and is full of old worldly charm and natural beauty. The beach has two crumbling old piers, standing towards the middle of the sea, and which one is stated to be over hundred years old.

The other beautiful beach is the Kappad Beach. It is about 20 km from the city of Calicut and has a major historical significance. In fact this is the same beach where Vasco De Gama landed with his sailors in 1498.

Another must visit place is the ship building port of Beypore. This is also one of the busiest fishing harbors of Kerala. Beypore has a wonderful beach with a walkway that spreads deep into the sea.

Not to be left behind, the Thusharagiri Waterfalls are a nature lovers delight and not to be missed. They are about 50 km from the city, nestled among the green lush forests.
