Amritsar, also known as the spiritual and traditional hub of the Sikh religion, is a must destination if travelling to Punjab. The city lies in north-western parts in India and is steeped in culture. There are many must visit places in Amritsar, and topping the list is the Harmandir Sahib or the Golden Temple.
Golden Temple is the most important shrine for the Sikh religion. In fact this place attracts more tourists than the Taj Mahal, with more than 100,000 visitors on weekdays alone. The place derives its name from the golden dome. Legend has it that Maharaja Ranjit Singh had built the upper half of the temple structure with 400 kg of golden leaf. The Temple building is a two-storied structure built on 67-sq feet of marble. The fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ram Das, had laid the foundation of the city, by initially constructing a pool here, which now houses the Golden Temple.
Apart from being the epicenter of Sikh religion, the city also has strong ties to the British era. In fact, there are so many must see places, such as the Jalianwala Bagh, the Khoo Kalyanwala and the historical Banyan Tree, which have a deep seeded connection with the struggle of independence from the British rule.
Another great place to visit is the Wagah Border. This is the only road crossing, connecting the Indian city of Amritsar, to the Pakistani city of Lahore. This international border is located some 28 km away from Amritsar and is a must stopover.
When in the city of Amritsar, the tourists must not forget to savor the cuisine of the region. The famous food landmarks of the city might not have an appealing ambience, but they serve the most sumptuous gourmet delights, such as the Kesar da Dhaba, Beera Chicken, Kulcha Land, Surjit Food Plaza and the Gurudas Ram Jalebiwala.
